COOMERA CONNECTOR: PLANNED NEW HIGHWAY TO EASE M1 TRAFFIC CONGESTION

Coomera-Connector-Planned

While the Gold Coast is experiencing and forecasting an unprecedented increase in population, planners at Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads are working to prevent and alleviate growing pains. The area’s main road to connect Gold Coast to Brisbane, the M1 Pacific Motorway, is already overcrowded with traffic. The solution – the Coomera Connector.

The Coomera Connector (sometimes referred to as the Second M1), is a planned $2.4 billion major highway that will run north-south between Loganholme and Nerang. It is designed to ease traffic congestion between the rapidly growing suburbs in the northern Gold Coast and neighbouring Logan areas.

The Coomera Connector will be a six-lane, 45km arterial road, running parallel to the M1. Currently, the congested M1 is used by nearly 160,00 vehicles per day. The new highway is expected to lighten that load by taking up to 60,000 vehicles off the M1 each day.

Construction on Stage 1 is expected to start this year and that section, running from Coomera to Nerang, will open for traffic in 2024.

Last year, Queensland welcomed 30,000 new residents, and the suburbs around Brisbane and the Gold Coast are experiencing double-digit annual growth rates. To handle the fast-growing population, improvements in infrastructure were already in the works for the region, thanks to the 2018 hosting of the Commonwealth Games, leading to a successful bid for the 2032 Olympics.

“The Coomera Connector will be an incredible improvement for the Gold Coast and anyone who knows how bad the traffic can be on the M1,” says Matt Sully, CEO of APFG. “Traffic was bound to be a major issue with the massive influx of residents that we are seeing. The Connector will help to ease that stress, allowing for easier access between the suburbs.”

APFG has a portfolio of projects on Gold Coast which will benefit from rising property prices and high demand for the area.
